And you thought salt was bad for you...

I remember my grandpa tellng me of the days when doctors spoke of the benefits of bacon, grease, eating lots of red meat... today we're told that's just the opposite. New York just passed a bill outlawing transfat usage in resturaunts, (so much for a good 'ol big mac), next thing you know we'll be eating sodium free, soy-full... EVERYTHING. Or will we? An article just publish by the New York Times shows that iodized salt helps to prevent brain damage in infants. Jack Ling goes so far as to say "Find me a mother who wouldn’t pawn her last blouse to get iodine if she understood how it would affect her fetus." Dr. Gerald Burrow of Yale's Medical Schools is quoted as sayng "For 5 cents per person per year, you can make the whole population smarter than before." Sounds like a wonder drug to me? The article is actually talking about iodine and the best way to get it is iodized salt.
I suppose this really shows nothing except history destined to repeat itself... first smoking was good for you.. starting January 1st you won't be able to smoke in any public place in Arizona... oh well... You smokers just hold out.. I'm sure in not-too-long, there'll be an article that says the amonia in cigarretts is actually a good thing. (maybe that's a stretch)

I suppose at some point I should post a real blog, today is not that day. So I'm currently attending Arizona State University in good 'ol Phoenix, AZ. I'm a 5 time college drop out.. but I'm in school now and that's all that matters right? I'm applying for an NSEP scholarship (http://www.ndu.edu/nsep) to study abroad in South Korea. I'll be interning in Washington D.C. this summer through The Washington Center for Seminars and Internships (http://www.twc.edu). I'll be taking a full load this spring in additional to an L2 Law Seminar offered at ASU's Sandra Day O'Connor School of Law.

So.. This is where the magic will happen:

"This holiday season, Wal-Mart isn't trumpeting big bargains only. It's also bringing "Christmas" back into its marketing, after several years of playing down the term." - Fox News Headline

Isn't it amazing that the use of the words "Merry Christmas" during Christmas would help sales? It's interesting to note that Wal-mart has conceided that after many years of trying to take Christmas out of the biggest shopping season of the year that they finally realize that the reason people shop, the reason 40% of their money is made between Thanksgiving and Christmas is... just that: IT'S CHRISTMAS.

I find it somewhat odd that Best Buy will not join the ranks of Kohls, Wal-Mart, Macy's and others this season. Best Buy's reasoning? "We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them"

Does Best Buy understand that it's not the "several holidays" that generate the revenue for them this time of year? And if their motivation were simply to be respectful of all holidays, then why not say "Happy Holidays" all year long? I personally think that they are being disrespectful of Flag Day, Arbor Day, Martin Luther King Day... if their reasoning is applied, everyday should be "Happy Holiday."

On a personal note, retailers celebrate holidays because it's another reason to have a sale and make more money. I wonder how much of the holiday sales boost is driven by Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or other holidays during the same period? I would venture to say that 99% of the increase in purchasing is from Christmas... So Merry Christmas, buy lots of stuff!
